- DO NOT micro manage. Communicate tasks and deadlines clearly, but then TRUST your team to get it done.
- DO NOT assume that others communicate and process information the same way you do, especially when all they may have to rely on is the written word.
- We may not have the opportunity for the much needed body language and/or tone of voice that we often rely on to decipher the underlying meaning of a message/statement/task, so if you are not sure about something, ASK!
- DO check in once per day.
- Offer help and support
- Stay solutions based
- Ask how others want to receive instructions and feedback and honor that the best you can.
- You must enable a safe space to ask questions and empower collaboration. If someone doesn’t agree with you, find out why and get curious. Respect their opinions, make sure they feel heard. And if you still don’t agree, share with them why and move on.
- Remember, this is likely one of the most stressful and chaotic times that many of us will ever experience. Be sure to communicate with empathy and patience. If someone is having a particularly hard time, do your best to not become judgmental as you do not know what is going on for them personally. If appropriate find out how you can help.
Loyalty, trust and respect are critical ingredients to a highly efficient, effective and productive workforce. This is a make or break time for many of us! If you do your best to be there for your people, they will likely do their best to be there for you.
